Madonna di Campiglio, thanks to its absolutely enchanting scenery and to its traditions and history of tourism, is among the places which contend the title of  "Queen of the Alps". Situated in the northern part of the province of Trento between the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello and Presanella peaks it has been a famous tourist destination since the mid 1800's. Over the decades its fame and prestige have spread  and today it is one of the best loved places for lovers of skiing and winter sports who also enjoy a rather lively social life too.

The 4 seasons

Madonna di Campiglio offers great opportunities for entertinment and sport during many months of the year  although it is certainly during the winter and skiing season that it comes into its own. Thanks to the 60 km of ski slopes connecting Madonna di Campiglio, and 30 km at Pinzolo and Folgarida-Marileva in Sun Valley, there is a fine total of 150 km of perfectly white slopes that are ideal for bothi skiing and snowboarding.

In the Grostè area at an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level, snowboarders love the Ursus Snow Park  which is among the finest equipped in Italy and beyond. The riders whether expert or not will enjoy sliding around the superb structures built in modelled snow: kickers, step-up, step down, funbox, spine, box and rails as well as a boardercross.

In this place that has been "kissed by Mother Nature", Madonna di Campiglio, all kinds of sporting and non sporting activity can be carried out, your wish is simply Madonna di Campiglio's command! Glacier climbing or incrediblly awesome climbing on ice cascades, entertaining trips on the snow in sledges pulled by gorgeous husky dogs, learning the techniques of  Sleddog through the woods and down the rolling slopes. Obviously there are great opportunities for skating, snow shoe walks, paragliding and much more besides.

In summer there is possibly even more to do on the mountian bike trails, the ferrati trails and mountain climbing; the Campo Carlo Magno Golf Club is one of the highest altitude courses in Europe, developed by one of the icons of the golfing world, Henry Cotton, which has been functioning since 1921 and is affliated with the Federazione Italiana Golf since 1923, becoming the third golf course in Italy. It has 9 holes with different departures and there are prestigious tornaments organized all through the summer season.

What to see

The calendar of events of a queen of the Alps is by definition a rich tapestry of appointments of all kinds, national and international. Since 1967 the  3Tre slope at Madonna di Campigliohas been part of the World Ski Championships and is considered by experts to be the most exciting slalom of the entire circuit.

Since 2008, for a whole week during the month of January the snow in the town turns red, the red of ferrari and Ducati. The  Wrooom Madonna di Campiglio immediately took off as one of the most popular international events of the whole of the Apls, an incredible mix of snow and motors, real passion and glamour. During a full week the Maranello drivers and Moto GP riders of the Ducati team will be involved in events such as Go Kart races on ice, ski runs, and a great many meetings with the public.

And the Hapsburg Carnival is not to be missed either, a fabulous pageant where the atmosphere of the Austrian Imperial Court is  relived at Madonna di Campiglio where in 1889 and 1894 duuring the reign of Franz Joseph and his adored Princess Sissi stayed. During this week, the sumptuous lifestyle of the times is relived, turning the village into a fashion parade of elegant ladies dressed in period costume and uniformed  Hussars on horseback with an abundance of Viennese waltzes to the notes of Strauss. Visitors may hire costumes and join in the fun of candlight descents on skis in honour of Princess Sissi and all her Court.

Shopping

Madonna di Campiglio and the whole of the Val Rendana is not just glamour and snow, it is also folklore and legend whose origins are lost in the mists of time, the times of the Holy Roman Empire and Charlemagne and his military expeditions there.

There are many popular tales that the varied nature of this valley has animated with dragons, witches and wizards, as well as miraculous events performed by saints. There are tangible traces of them in the names of the places, Sasso della Luna, Moonstone,  and il dirupo del cattivo nipote, or the evil nephew's leap and so on and so forth, as well as in the churches and sanctuaries.

At Pinzolo, in St Vigilio's Church, a dance macabre can be admired, by  Simone II Baschenis di Averaria painted in 1539, where the living of various social backgrounds are invited by the dead to take part in a dance before Death, the Devil himself and the Archangel St Michael.
